Why You Should Take A Different Approach In Cleaning Your Upholstery

From couches, sofas to dining chairs, upholstered furniture is versatile and stylish. It can be incorporated easily into any interior design providing an air of elegance and chic to any room. However, as chic and multi-purpose as they are, upholstery can be challenging to clean. This post will provide you with the basics of what upholstered furniture includes, their benefits, and why you should take a different approach to clean them.

What Is Upholstery?

Let us break down what we can consider as upholstery. Simply put, upholstery constitutes all the materials that are used to provide a soft covering to any furniture. Fabrics such as leather, wool, cotton, microfiber, and canvas are commonly used in upholstery along with different forms of padding.

Pieces of furniture that incorporate these materials are considered upholstered. Modern upholstery involves synthetic materials that can easily be manufactured and are relatively cheaper and easier to maintain.

What You May Be Doing Wrong

Over the years, upholstered furniture has grown into popularity since it can come in different styles and varieties, making it easy to customize and fit any style.

To keep it looking as new, individuals have come up with ways to clean it. However, some DIY cleaning has resulted in further damage to their upholstery. Here are some of the things you may be doing wrong with your furniture sanitization.

Using strong detergents or cleaning agents.

It may be tempting to remove a stain using a strong cleaning agent, but you should avoid this at all costs. Strong detergents can cause discoloration in your upholstery. It is recommended to use mild soap and blot out stains instead of scrubbing it.

Soaking Stains With Water

When you spray a large amount of water on a stain, you run the risk of molds growing inside your cushions, especially when it is not dried off completely. Although the upholstery may look dry on the surface, moisture may take time to evaporate in the padding.

Not Following Your Manufacturer’s Instructions

Some pieces of upholstery come with cleaning instructions, usually located on their tag. It’s best to follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions to ensure that you don’t damage your upholstery.

Caring For Your Upholstery

Maintaining upholstered furniture can be intimidating, and care usually depends on the type of materials used in upholstering it. For instance, leather requires a different kind of approach compared to velvet or cotton upholstery. Unlike ordinary furniture, it’s not enough to wipe upholstery clean. It involves various layers of materials under a fabric, thus needing more thorough upkeep.

While there are things we can do, such as removing a stain or vacuuming the dust off the upholstery, deep cleaning is still needed to ensure that your furniture stays clean and in good condition. Home sanitization service providers make this possible. Using state-of-the-art equipment, you’ll rest assured that the space you call home is hygienic and safe.

The Process

With upholstery cleaning and sanitization, it involves three steps.

Step 1: Vacuuming

First is vacuuming and removing any debris and dust that’s in the upholstery. Although your upholstered sofa or chair looks spotless, underneath that layer of cloth are dead skin cells, dust, dirt, and even growing viruses and bacteria. Using an industrial-grade vacuum cleaner, these are pulled out from the sofa.

Step 2:  UV Sanitizer

The machine that Adams Care uses generates high-frequency waves that loosen up any hardened debris, brakes it down, and lifts it up and into a disposable HEPA (High-Frequency Particulate Air) filter.

Step 3: Superheated Dry Steam

The next step is killing any microorganisms or DNA of viruses and bacteria left from the vacuum process. To achieve this, an ultraviolet sanitizer is used. Exposing your upholstery to this sanitizer is equivalent to 48 hours or two days under the sun.

This third step slows down bacterial growth in the mattress. Finally, overheated dry steam is used to disinfect your upholstery and eliminate any remaining microorganisms, bacteria, germ, and viruses through superheated steam up to 180o Celsius.

These processes are guaranteed to freshen up your upholstery and make it look and feel brand new. If you wish to learn more about our sanitization services, including upholstery and mattress sanitizing service, you can contact us at Adams Care today.
