What’s That Stench? 4 Reasons Why Your AC Emits A Bad Odor

In this burning heat, the last thing you want to experience is a smelly AC duct. You might feel disgruntled because you opened the AC expecting cold air to hit you immediately but instead, you were hit with a very pungent smell and you were not able to figure out how it was happening.

Let us go through some of the reasons why your AC might be giving off a bad smell:

A Burning Smell

If you can sense a burning smell coming from your AC then the biggest problem is that some part of your AC unit is burning. It can be caused by any mechanical issue within the AC that was probably missed during AC maintenance

You should immediately turn your AC off since it can quickly escalate into a fire hazard. Usually, the problem should be solved by turning the system off, but if the smell continues to exist, then you should contact the fire department. You can ensure that the smell can be reduced through regular AC maintenance.

It Smells Like Cigarettes

If you or a family member in the same house smoke cigarettes then chances are that the smell of the cigarettes has traveled into the AC ducts and the particles have become lodged in there. Every time you turn on your AC, you will smell smoke due to this very reason. A simple way to fix this is to change your air filters frequently.

In an ideal situation, you should change the air filters every 90 days anyways, however, changing them twice a year is enough as well. Once in the summer and once in the winter.

There Is A Rotten Smell

If you can sense something rotten, then there is a chance that some kinds of rodents died in your AC ducts. Even if you have checked everywhere, you probably missed a few places where rodents like to hide and likely died as well, hence, the smell.

The air handler is one of those places that you must have missed. An air handler is the one that circulates the air around the house and it makes air go through the air filters.

They are usually placed in garages or the attic of the house and these are all the likely places where little rodents like to hide. Depending on the location, you might be able to extract the rodent, but sometimes you might need to get professional help.

If It Smells Like Mold

With the other problems listed above, it was quick and easy to solve them, but if mold is the reason behind that musty smell in your house, then that is a difficult problem to get rid of. Usually, the smell of mold grows gradually and embeds itself in your house, so sometimes you might not even be able to smell it at all.

The only way you can find out is if someone enters the house after spending a long time outside. The presence of mold indicates that there is a water issue either in your house or in the air conditioning system. You can prevent this from happening in your AC ducts through regular AC maintenance or get professional help if there is water damage.
